Each year in the United States, termites account for more damage than hurricanes and fires combined – more than 4 billion dollars each year.  The eastern subterranean termite common to our area is responsible for more home damage than any other termite in the United States.  It’s no wonder that homeowners are very concerned about this unseen pest.
The eastern subterranean termite lives underground in a colony system and requires moisture to sustain an active colony.  When termites invade a structure, this moisture can come from plumbing leaks, condensation on air ducts, and even from poor drainage around exterior foundation walls.  Thus, the first order of business in dealing with termites is to eliminate the source of moisture.
Selecting the proper treatment option is the next step.  Chemical companies have developed a variety of options that work in different ways.  Some chemicals create a barrier that termites will not pass through which protects the dwelling, while other chemicals cannot be detected by the termite and are carried back to the main colony thus eliminating the colony.  Still other companies have created detection sensors that are put in place around the perimeter of a structure with a course of treatment only after the “sensors” show signs of activity.  The best choice for a particular homeowner depends upon numerous factors including the type of prior treatment (if any), the proximity of the structure to wells/bodies of water, and the homeowner’s personal preference, among others.
Mares Exterminating Company is proud to employ several Master Termite Technicians who specialize in finding termites and creating a treatment plan that works for the homeowner.  All our termite inspectors have received the “Certified Inspector” credential from the Virginia Pest Management Association – which guarantees our customers the best possible inspection.
