Keep These Unwanted Hitchhikers Out of Your Home

Bed bugs take invasive pests to a new level. Most of the pests that Mares Exterminating handles are large enough that you can see them easily with the naked eye. Bed bugs, on the other hand, are extremely small.

They're also more challenging to prevent than most other household pests. Other bugs can be discouraged from invading your home by keeping your home clean, depriving the insects of food sources, and sealing gaps that allow them entry. Bed bugs sneak in on luggage and ride in on your clothing, and you're their preferred food source.

Contact Mares Exterminating at the first sign of bed bugs. We use proven, state-of-the-art techniques to safely rid your home of these unwanted guests. Call our company today for your free consultation.

10 Techniques for Bed Bug Prevention

Most bed bug infestations begin with a few of the pests sneaking into your home by piggybacking on your clothing or luggage. The tips below (provided in the NPMA Pest Gazette, Summer 2009) help you travel without bringing home any hitchhikers.

  1. Inspect your room thoroughly when you check into a hotel. Bed bugs feed on human blood during the night, so you're most likely to find them or small blood spots in or behind the headboard, behind the picture above the bed, or in the seams of the mattress and box spring.
  2. Before using the valet stand or luggage rack, inspect its fabric seams. Once you've made sure it's safe, place your suitcase on it. Then leave your suitcase there throughout your visit. Do not place your suitcase on the floor or on any other furniture in the room.
  3. If you can move the bed, pull it away from the wall. Do not let the bed linens touch the floor.
  4. Before you use the closet, check the hangers and clothes rack.
  5. Before placing items in or on the nightstand or dresser drawers, check them for bed bugs.
  6. If you find bed bugs, alert the hotel management right away and let them know that you would like a different room. Good hotels are very concerned about this issue and address the problem right away.
  7. If you use the furniture in the lobby of the hotel (such as waiting for a taxi or airport shuttle), check it for bed bugs before sitting on it.
  8. Bed bugs can inhabit trains, planes, and other transportation with upholstery, so check any seats, blankets, or pillows while you travel.
  9. When you get home, do not bring your luggage into your house. Open it and unpack in the garage or on the patio or porch. Inspect your clothing and luggage thoroughly before bringing them inside.
  10. If you find that you've brought home bed bugs, call Mares Exterminating immediately. As with all insect infestations, taking care of it early is much easier than dealing with it once it's gotten out of hand.

Great company to work with. Had inspection performed prior to sale of house. Damage was found and corrected prior to buyer's inspection without a hitch. Would use these guys again without a second thought.
