The House Mouse in Detail

In our area, the house mouse (Mus musculus, Latin for "little thief") is one of the most common household and business pests. If they get into your kitchen or pantry, they'll gnaw into boxes and contaminate your food. If they get into your walls, they'll destroy insulation and foul it with their waste. They may also gnaw wires, and that can result in a fire hazard.

Cartoons may make mice appear to be cuddly scamps, but the real animals are known to carry over 20 different pathogens, as well as ectoparasites like ticks and fleas.

The average house mouse is around three inches long and gray with dull white belly fur. Most weigh about an ounce. Mice eat often, and they constantly leave trails of droppings and urine droplets. They're avid explorers that will roam throughout your home looking for food, shelter, and mates. A single house mouse produces up to 18,000 droppings per year, and it will deposit hundreds of micro-droplets of urine as it travels your home and marks its trail.

They breed rapidly, and they reach maturity within 35 days after birth. Within 60 days, they can reach sexual maturity and produce a litter of up to eight pups. Theoretically, one breeding pair could produce more than 500 young within one year, although natural attrition generally limits that growth. Mice live about one year.

Mice are acrobatic. They can jump down more than six feet without injury, and they can jump straight up about a foot from a standing position. They can climb up to eight feet of brick or wood paneling wall in less than 30 seconds. They can fit through holes and cracks as small as ¼ of an inch (approximately the width of a standard pencil).

Mice are extremely destructive, difficult to remove, and potentially hazardous to your health. For complete mouse removal services, call Mares Exterminating today. We'll figure out how they're getting in and how to keep them out.

Five stars all the way! Daniel came by today to do a pre-inspection for us before we list our home. He was very friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. I was pleasantly surprised and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mares Exterminating. I hope to be able to call them back when we close on the house.
